Roger Sagal

Colorado Litigation Lawyer

While still in law school, Roger cut his teeth as a public interest litigator with the renowned Tulane Environmental Law Clinic.

He began his private practice with the firm of McGlinchey Stafford in Louisiana where he worked primarily as a litigation lawyer.  While there, he handled business disputes, civil rights cases, employment cases, insurance matters, and complex construction litigation.

He moved to Colorado in 1998, was admitted to the Colorado Bar that same year, and practiced with the Denver trial firm Netzorg McKeever. Among other things Roger worked on matters involving long term coal supply contracts, REITS, and consumer protection disputes.   Roger also handled the defense of a creditor suit relating to the bankruptcy of Western Pacific Airlines.

Roger then practiced with the Tisdel Law Firm in Ouray, Colorado from 2001 to early 2014. While there, he was part of the trial team that successfully defended a small mining company and its officers against multi-million dollar fraud claims brought by Barrick Goldstrike Mines.   He secured substantial ERISA, insurance, and other employment benefits on behalf of children and their court-appointed conservators from their late father’s employer.   He brought malpractice claims against a surveying company resulting from errors in the survey of patented mining claims which resulted in a substantial settlement for his client.

More recently, Roger was an integral part of a team that successfully defended a Texas resident against first degree murder charges brought by the 7th Judicial District Attorney and the Colorado Attorney General’s office. The case, which received national media attention, spanned over five years and close to nine total weeks of trial before two juries in two separate jurisdictions. It ultimately resulted in a complete dismissal of the charges.

Legal Transactions in Colorado

Roger has drafted and negotiated complex business agreements on behalf of clients.  His understanding of the pitfalls of drafting, through his experience as a Denver litigation lawyer, helps him to advise clients about structuring agreements that have the best chance of avoiding future misunderstandings.   That same skill also allows Roger to structure creative settlements in the litigation context.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

Roger believes strongly in alternative dispute resolution.   For this reason, Roger is a certified mediator and is available to mediate disputes in business, domestic relations, or any other matter in which the parties agree or are ordered to attempt mediation before taking their matter to trial.

Roger launched Sagal Law, LLC in 2014.

Roger is based in Ridgway, Colorado with his wife Lisa and their daughters Autumn and Amelia.  Roger and his family enjoy many of the activities the mountains offer such as mountain biking, hiking, skiing, and fly fishing.   Roger played competitive rugby since college and has competed on clubs in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Dublin, Breckenridge, and Denver.  He enjoys martial arts, boxing, and jiu jitsu.

Roger is a former elected member and President of the Ridgway, Colorado School Board.
