about our firm

Trust

Sagal Law honestly advises our clients. We are both advocates and counselors. We believe that trust is the essential ingredient for a successful attorney-client relationship. Our clients benefit from a focused, no-nonsense approach.

Teams

Sagal Law collaborates and builds teams.  We believe that the best results often come from extensive collaboration.   We pride ourselves on building the right team to meet the particular needs of a case. We co-counsel with other lawyers and firms when the need arises. We regularly consult with specialists in their particular fields at issue in the matter. If the matter requires and the budget allows, we retain experts to help us analyze issues and if necessary explain complex scientific and technical principles to a fact-finder.

Litigation

Sagal Law is an experienced litigation firm. If a client finds itself in a lawsuit or other legal proceeding, our case development and preparation methods have allowed us to obtain significant results for clients at settlement, in alternative dispute resolution, and at trial in a huge array of cases pending in numerous types of forums. Our intense study of the particular subject matter and the law at issue in a matter enable us to present our client’s cases in a straightforward way that the fact-finder can understand.

Creativity

Sagal Law embraces creativity. Precedent and experience are of course vital to the practice of law. Nevertheless, we believe innovation has a place in the practice of law as much as other professional and life endeavors. Innovation – in crafting agreements, in negotiating settlements, in preparing and presenting cases at trial – can be the difference in whether a project is successful or not.

Solution-Oriented

Sagal Law specializes in….legal solutions. To be sure, there are many specialties of practice within the law that require specialized knowledge and expertise. However, we believe that our methods of practice are applicable to many areas of the law and many different types of legal issues. Our experience in areas as varied as contracts, business torts, domestic relations, criminal law, real estate, mining, insurance, construction, insurance and natural resources has given us a broad base of knowledge within which to analyze a client’s particular issue. We think of our “specialty” as our use of analytical and advocacy skills to help clients navigate through their particular legal issues and obtain successful outcomes.

Attorney

Roger Sagal

Roger has been an attorney and counselor at law since 1995. He has decades of experience handling matters that touch on numerous different subject areas. Roger has practiced in Louisiana, Denver, and Ouray, Colorado. In 2014 Roger founded Sagal Law, LLC. based in Ridgway, Colorado. Roger remains proud to maintain a diverse practice in varied areas of the law. Roger has extensive trial and appellate experience and has an excellent record of getting results for his clients.

The following are some examples of Roger’s work:

  • He successfully represented a small gold mining company and its officers accused of fraud by one of the largest gold mining companies in the world. The matter went to a jury trial and resulted in a jury verdict in favor of the defendants.

  • He successfully represented a husband and father who was wrongly accused of murder. The complicated and difficult case was tried to a jury twice in two different jurisdictions and resulted in two mistrials. The charges were ultimately dropped. The case received national media attention and was featured in several national news programs.

  • He represented the guardians and conservators of two minor siblings whose father was tragically killed and mother was incarcerated for the crime.

  • He represented a deputy sheriff in a First Amendment civil rights claim against his employer and the sheriff’s office. The case was successfully resolved in the deputy’s favor.

  • He has represented homeowners, contractors, and other building professionals in an array of construction defect disputes.

  • He has litigated in the areas of professional malpractice involving land surveyors, engineers, and lawyers.

  • In the employment realm, he has represented both employees and employers in wrongful termination cases.  He has brought actions on behalf of employees and defended employers in the courts and before the Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

  • He has extensive experience in real property matters, including easements, land use, conveyances, ditch and water rights, residential and commercial leases, nuisance, and restrictive covenants. He often handles matters involving homeowner’s associations.

  • Roger dedicates time for pro bono representation to support larger causes. He is a volunteer lawyer for the Election Official Legal Defense Network and Justice for Military Families.

In 2022, Roger intervened in a lawsuit pending in United States District Court on behalf of an unaffiliated Colorado voter alongside the Colorado Secretary of State to successfully defend the constitutionality of Colorado’s “semi-open” primary system against a challenge brought by a group of Republican candidates for office. The Court’s decision dismissing the Republicans’ claims was a victory for those who believe our election system works best when it is open to more voters and that one’s country is more important than one’s party.

Roger believes that this is an important time to be a lawyer. In an era of rampant disinformation intended to distort and destroy our trust in democratic institutions, the courts must remain a bulwark against tyranny, a place where proof remains required and facts still determine the outcome. Of course, courts are not immune to committing some of our worst mistakes and injustices. Yet our judicial system, at its best, remains designed to seek the truth and to provide all the parties who come before it, regardless of background, wealth, or status, with due process and equal protection of the laws. In an era where the rule of law is in grave danger from being destroyed by individuals who crave absolute power for themselves, we must protect the integrity of the courts and the court system from malign influences like greed, corruption, and tribalism. To be a lawyer in this dangerous era is to have a special obligation to protect and defend the rule of law.
